The alarm, which I set on radio starts softily and grows louder to full strength that you set, Without that sudden Burst of sound .The setup is a little lengthily so start from the beginning and make sure you have set your proper time Zone. This is probably the fourth or fifth clock I've purchased for my bedroom, but haven't really liked any of them quite like this one. It is a little difficult to master, but after re-referencing the instructions about a dozen times I got the hang of it. The battery backup isn't able to operate the radio so you can't rely on it for any severe weather information if the power goes out, but other than that I don't really have any complaints about it. My wife loves the digital thermometer! I wake up to radio, and wish I'd known that the alarm (radio) only sounds for 30 minutes. So if you set it for 6:00 a.m. and hit snooze a few times, nothing happens after 6:30 a.m. I can be a bit of a snooze-pusher, so this is troubling, but it's also annoying because I like to listen to the radio while I'm getting ready, and with all of my old clock radios, the radio would continue playing for a full hour before automatically turning off. I've remedied this setting the second alarm for 6:30, so the radio runs continuously until 7, but it's not ideal. As others have noted, it also very challenging to program. I had the alarm off during an extended break from work over the holiday, and when I tried to turn it back on I had to get out the instructions. <i>Verified purchase from Electrohome trusted store</i>.
